If you are seriously trying to quit porn, it should be a no brainer that you need to trash your stash. Clean your hard drive, cancel any memberships you have, and if you are old school, toss those magazines/DVD’s away. You aren’t going to be needing these things in your new porn free life and keeping them around is just temptation that could lead you toward a relapse.

However, the more troublesome part of your stash is the one that is located inside your head. This is commonly referred to as the “yank bank” – that stash of thoughts that contains your favorite sexual memories, fantasies, or porn clips. The most troubling part of the yank bank is how it can cause “porn flashbacks” that can be quite troubling for someone who is in the process of reboot. One moment you are fine but out of nowhere explicit sexual images start running through your mind.

There are two main things that you can do to deal with this issue:

  1. Consciously shift into presence when these things pop up

  2. Keep yourself from depositing new thoughts into the “bank”

Presence

The first part is simple – when you have these kinds of thoughts pop up into your mind, you need to tune into your current physical experience. So if you are walking to class and all of a sudden a porn clip starts playing in your mind, the proper response is to acknowledge what is happening, and then consciously choose to shift your awareness to become present in your body.

Basically just tune into your senses. Let yourself feel the wind on your face, your feet as they touch the ground, and the air as it flows in and out of your lungs. Take note of any tension in your body and consciously relax it. When you do this, it is very common to notice some emotions coming up. This is good – let yourself simply feel them without judgment. By bringing your awareness to these things, your awareness cannot be on the porn.
