Summary/Abstract:

The aim of the study was to investigate the correlates of pornography usage when taking into account its categories. It had an exploratory character. 136 people took part in this study. Out of the 25 most popular keywords used to search for pornography on the Internet, 8 categories occurred to be popular enough to be analyzed: “amateur”, “BDSM”, “hardcore”, “lesbian”, “teen”, “anal sex”, “oral sex” and “group sex”.

Three of 5 hypotheses were confirmed. There was a relationship between openness to experience with the preferences for the “BDSM” and “group sex” categories, as well as the between the frequency of pornographic usage and physical aggression.

The relationship between high extraversion and preference of the racial categories (“Asian”, “Black/Ebony”, “Latina”, “Interracial”) occurred to be impossible to verify due to the low popularity of these categories.

There was no evidence of the relationship between low agreeableness with the preference of aggressive “hardcore” category. The study also showed significant gender differences – men were more likely to prefer “amateur” and “teen” categories, women preferred “BDSM” and “group sex” categories.

The information obtained in the study can be extremely helpful from the perspective of the practice psychological. Paying attention to gender differences as well as popularity of preferences in category and metaphorical data will allow us to better understand and analyze during therapy couples having problems with sexual adjustment or marital problems in relation to watching or gender viewed pornography by one of the partners. They can also be helpful in therapy individual patients showing impaired sexual preferences that prevent them for example, making relationships or maintaining a relationship as well as individual work with clients addicted to pornography – they will allow us to better recognize the mechanism addiction (based on increasing interest, escalation, sensitization and incarnation and sexual preferences in life). These results can allow the therapist to easily recognize when individual preferences will differ from the most popular ones.
