COMMENTS: Delta FosB is one the primary molecules of addiction. It rises, or accumulates, during an addiction process, reinforcing addictive behavior and rewiring of the brain. It rises whether the addiction is chemical or behavioral. This study shows that it accumulates during sexual activity and consumption of sugar. Researchers also found that sexual activity increased the consumption of sugar. Delta FosB may be involved in one addiction reinforcing another addiction. The question is – how does “over consumption” of porn affect Delta FosB?

COMMENTS: Delta FosB is a marker for all addictions, both behavioral and chemical. As this molecule increases in the reward circuit so do addictive behaviors. It’s one of the molecules involved in neuroplastic changes. This experiment shows that it increases with sexual experience, similarly to how it does with drug addictions. In the experiment they employed genetic engineering to increase its levels beyond “normal”. This resulted in enhanced facilitation of sexual activity. We think this happens with porn addiction.

Getting help for issues related to excessive porn use is a fine idea. However, many therapists have no conception of how addictive today’s hyperstimulating Internet porn is. Many were trained when static, softcore Playboy was porn, and before the recent brain science that is helping to explain the close parallels between extremely stimulating substances and […]

COMMENTS: What this shows is that rats like to gamble, so it’s a evolutionary advantage to gamble. It also shows that near misses can heightened dopamine response. As stated, if gambling can alter our limbic brains, then porn certainly can. It is also a reminder that we share basic limbic functions with our mammal cousins.

YBOP COMMENTS: Important findings in this study are that neither time spent viewing porn on the Internet nor personality factors were associated the level of reported problems with Internet porn use (IAT sex score). Instead, it was intensity of the experience and amount of novelty (different applications opened) that mattered…suggesting that dopamine levels were at […]

Will stopping porn solve my problems? Porn is actually a synthetic substitute for the daily pleasures that naturally gave your ancestors a sense of wellbeing—such as companionship. YBOP Comments: The concept of behavioral addictions is controversial to some therapists and sexologists. However, it is becoming clear to researchers that behavioral addictions cause brain changes that mirror drug addictions. This has to be, as all a drug can do is amplify or inhibit a normal physiological mechanism. Addiction mechanisms are already in the […]

This FAQ is now obsolete as the world’s most widely used medical diagnostic manual, The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), contains a new diagnosis suitable for porn addiction and cybersex addiction: “Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder.” The current state of the scientific research supports the existence of porn addiction and porn-induced sexual dysfunctions. For example, a […]
